Delhi 2 Dublin is not based in Delhi or Dublin or even between the two. It’s based in Vancouver. Planet Electric is the band’s own personal bhangra-variant, with Irish fiddling and intermittent breaks to give the Indian music a rippling jig that goes with the dhol percussion. The fiddler, Kytami, steps away from the drums and winds the music up in a taut spiral, creating two kinds of excitement: the rattling dhol pounding and pounding, and the fiddle twisting like hair wound around a pencil. There is some singing, but it’s mainly there for the texture of the voice in the mix and for the existence of exhortations to go with the instrumental excitement. On “S.O.S.”, a deep, stern, reggae boom works with Sanjay Seran’s lighter pop tenor. “We must stop the stress,” quips the singer with a straight face as his friends strive to get you as galvanized as possible.
