Texan sound magician Spencer Stephenson gives us a taste of what is likely to follow in what we can all hope is a long and prosperous career. Using samples from bygone eras and wisely employing the sanguine singing of Ashley Rathburn, Stephenson creates an astonishingly strong EP with Feeling Today. If the dreamy pop of “Minnow Theme” doesn’t hook you then perhaps the otherworldly sculpturing of “Feeling Today” will. It’s hard to say with all sincerity that Stephenson offers much that’s novel but then again neither does water––and you can see how that hasn’t become any less necessary of late. Methinks maybe Stephenson hasn’t truly found his voice yet and, given that he’s 22, that’s hardly a surprise. But what voice is there? Well. We’ll keep listening though. Won’t we?
