HotChaCha/Summer People

Do It

(Exit Stencil; US: 23 Aug 2011; UK: Import)

Do It is a split EP. First up is Cleveland’s HotChaCha, a unit that’s been described as a combination of Hawkwind and Bikini Kill. The three-woman, one-man band sure makes a racket, bringing together post-punk, dance, and new wave with somewhat mixed results. “Aorist”, which clocks in at just over two minutes, suggests that HotChaCha may be at its best when it keeps things simple and straight. The moody “Suicide Mission” fares best and features vocalist Jovana Batkovic in top form.

Summer People’s brand of brattitude also fails to inspire. Vocalist Alex Craver mostly howls like Glenn Danzig stubbing his toe an infant’s cradle. “The Fox And The Hound” and “94 Chapin” blur together like domestic beers. For a brief, hot-burnt moment “Et Cetera” manages to combine Nick Cave and Teenage Jesus and The Jerks with a dash of the Cramps. The entire EP lasts a mere 24 minutes and it’s over none-too-soon.
