If Mike + The Mechanics, the pop machine project from Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford, had been founded in Columbus, Ohio, sometime in the last five years, it might have sounded something like this—frigid textures, pristine but unremarkable vocals/lyrics and the sense that the music is meant at once for everyone and no one. It’s not that the band is incompetent—far from it—but rather that it hasn’t found a convincing voice just yet. Perhaps this is music best suited for long cul-de-sac make-out sessions at the end of the summer before your sophomore year and not much else. Shrug.
