Girls Who Look Like Me

(Quite Scientific; US: 31 Jan 2012; UK: Import)

Hailing from Ypsilanti, Michigan, this pop-driven unit preps for its new full-length with four tracks of fanatical fun for pop appreciators. Leah Diehl’s vocals are sweet (although not overly so) and if there’s a certain familiarity to that sweetness, it’s no deal breaker. The breakneck pace of “When You Sleep” and thunk-thunk-thunk of “I Know” show the trio (rounded out by Aaron Diehl and Ben Collins) having what you might call a good, old-fashioned Midwestern blast. The ballad-y closer “Wake Up and Find Myself” may be the best thing here, although that’s a close call among four strong compositions. Only one track comes in at over three minutes––and not a moment of any one is wasted.

A whole whack of songs played on piano about love and heartbreak, sung by a woman (Leah Diehl) whose voice soars into the stratosphere, that are so sweet you could reach out and squeeze them by their rosy red cheeks.
