Guitarist/vocalist Matt Murillo and drummer/vocalist Kelly Norman are the Maxines, a band rooted in both deep blues and proto-punk. The lazy comparison to make, especially after listening to Drugstore, would be the White Stripes, but really the Maxines have a lot more in common with the Madison, Wisconsin up-and-comers the Hussy. Both have an affinity for snotty call and response vocals as well as raw noise. The Maxines set themselves apart by fully embracing the primitive sound standard set by Delta blues musicians and given a shot to the arm by the Gun Club.
This is, simply put, stupid fun. It’s a testament to the youthful abandon of rock ‘n’ roll, and at an endlessly listenable four tracks, it’s something you can play again and again. All the tracks on Drugstore are short but pack enough punch to be memorable.
