The Definitive Jazz/Rock Sampling Hybrid Band

There has been a resurgence in mash-up remixes since the success Danger Mouse had with The Gray Album and the even more massive success of Girl Talk. However, they’ve all been confined to a particular sound and never attempted anything as challenging as the central concept of Jazz Punks’ Smashups. This is a record full of some very well-known pieces spanning both the classic and alternative rock side of things as well as jazz. For instance, “I Can See Miles” manages to fuse the Who’s “I Can See for Miles” with Miles Davis’ “Pfrancing” effortlessly. At times, Smashups is a very challenging listen but when the band manages to land on grooves like the ones found in “Take the ‘A’ Train”, it’s irresistible.
