LooperUp a Tree(Sub Pop) by Sarah ZupkoPopMatters Editor & Publisher
Having cornered the market on indie pop cool with Belle & Sebastian, bassist Stuart David steps out on his own with Looper, a poetic performance art ensemble that includes his wife, visual artist Karn David. Boasting a mixture of spoken word poetry, lo-fi pop, vocal samples, gentle guitar strumming and keyboard noodlings, Up A Tree winningly meanders through love and life stories, children’s voices and a clanging typewriter setting the tone of the album. A mellow, literate vibe pervades this record, but this is not to be listened to as background music. Brew a pot of tea, kick back and enjoy David’s enjoyable yarns.
