Poster ChildrenNew World Record(spinART) by Sarah ZupkoPopMatters Editor & Publisher
Long-time college radio faves from Champaign, the Poster Children have returned to their indie roots at last, and so perhaps, for them, it is a new world after all. As their first self-produced and home-recorded effort, New World Record certainly begins promisingly enough. “Accident Waiting to Happen” possesses the Poster Children’s patented hard, melodic pop-punk with jagged textures and stop-start rhythms, as does “6x6,” a song that positively wallows in claustrophobia, with its harsh rhythms and lyrics like “There is no space inside this place/But I reside inside the wire 6x6, my room is 6x6.” Elsewhere, “Time to Kill” sports a deep angular funk sound that recalls Gang of Four crossed with a mean Buzzcocks-styled guitar riff ala “Fast Cars.”
