EccodekVoices Have Eyes(White Swan) US release date: 24 April 2007 UK release date: Available as import by Neal HayesIn addition to creating music, Andrew McPherson narrates commercials and sings jingles, but he’s such a good electronic producer that he shouldn’t need a day job. Under the name Eccodek, McPherson has released a trio of albums, including his latest CD, Voices Have Eyes. The Eccodek sound is rooted in dub, but it encompasses a truly global range of styles. Voices includes guest appearances by singers from Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, India, Turkey, and Fiji. McPherson creates understated grooves from his own performances on bass, keys, flute, sax, and percussion, and he enlists the help of a few friends to augment the instrumental mix with additional guitar and drum parts. While some global electronica feels contrived and stiff, Eccodek’s music is completely organic. The beats move with a loose energy and enhance the indigenous flavors of the African and Asian vocalists. Voices would be at home everywhere from a club to a car CD player, and any music fan would do well to check it out.
