As evidenced by his appearance on Urb‘s list of the top 100 best producers of electronic music, Håkan Lidbo’s not only prolific and talented, he’s well-loved. His tracks number in the thousands and cover a gamut of genres, incorporating funky Latin and disco beats in some, pushing the industrial quirks of minimal and click-house in others. The 11 songs that appear on his most recent venture, Dunka Dunka (so-named after an expression used by “old people” to describe modern music), lean toward the latter, which may disappoint fans of his Fatboy Slim and Kool Keith remixes. This all-original album experiments heavily with dark beats and tweaks disco lines with so many blips and bleeps that many of the songs, most notably the opener “Shawnstooker”, sound as if they soundtracked video games. Though not necessarily bust-a-move techno, you can always bust out the Robot or do the Pac-Man while appreciating Lidbo’s funky, humor-filled productions.
