Rekid is supposedly Matt Edwards’ (aka Quiet Village, Radio Slave) more “underground” work and it proves an apt description. From the creepily crawling bass of opener “Lost Star 6”, through the slow vocal and Soft Cell-gone-darkside ‘80s sound on “85 Space”, this album is a brooding, cold machine-disco nemesis, gut-wrenchingly threatening to punch you good. “Made in Menorca” is excellent in its intensity, but the intensity is often suffocating, like a menacing storm or claustrophobia in a dark and dank cave. As if you were trapped at the very center of the Paris catacombs, staffed with a DJ who enjoys tormenting you for some reason. This album takes some stomach, but is ultimately very rewarding. I always wondered what Theo Parrish would sound like if he had a grudge-holding, apocalyptic and slightly sadistic side.
