New Buffalo EP

(Arts & Crafts)

US release date: 25 April 2006

UK release date: 5 August 2005

Australia release date: 5 August 2005

by John Bergstrom

A classic stopgap EP, this five-track release from the Australian singer-songwriter New Buffalo (real name Sally Seltmann) throws together a few remixes/alternate versions of tracks from 2005’s debut album with a couple of outtakes/leftovers. It makes for an eclectic listen, the lounge-pop of “Inside” giving way to the near-ambient Broken Social Scene remix of “I’ve Got You and You’ve Got Me”, the piano-led “Stay Here While You’re Gone”, and the Sundays-meet-PJ Harvey re-recording of “I’ve Got You…”. Seltmann knows the “quirky/eccentric” territory well—her biggest asset since she’s not a particularly gifted singer. A suitably mopey Sunday morning soundtrack to go with your dour newspaper headlines.

Sparse and subdued, New Buffalo's debut eases on by in a waft of pleasantness without any lingering sense of significance.
