Dean & Britta

White Horses EP

(Sonic Cathedral)

US release date: 5 November 2007

UK release date: 5 November 2007

by Dan Raper

The “White Horses” double A-side by Dean & Britta is a lovely but disposable thing, two disparate but clearly related versions of a song previously released on the married duo’s full-length from earlier in the year. And where Back Numbers’ “White Horses” was mellow, these two versions up the ante, with even softer accompaniments, even sweeter vocals (one time in French!). The song’s a cover of a 1968 single by a singer called Jacky, itself a cover of a Serbian/German children’s TV show, apparently. And look, it’s a lovely song, it just doesn’t deserve the limelight of a release all to itself. It’s being released as a limited edition vinyl-only 7”. Perhaps there’s an audience for this twee loveliness. But standing so bare, surrounded by nothing but its own twinkling pop, the song makes you wish for something more substantial.
