(Mad Dauber)

by Steve Horowitz

Return with us to those glorious sounds of yesterday, when dark and dirty meant—well, dark and dirty. The members of The Gilded Bats play old time country stringband music with lots of pluck and a boisterous attitude. The four-piece combo (fiddle, banjo, washtub bass, acoustic guitar) perform a repertoire of classic tunes (i.e. “Cripple Creek”, “Cumberland Gap”) and modern silliness (i.e. the Holy Modal Rounders “Give the Fiddler a Dram,” the bawdy “When Lulu Goes” full of ribald pokes about Lulu going bang and such) with raw vigor and a sense of fun. They all sing spiritedly and while the vocals ain’t always pretty, The Gilded Bats’ magic lies in its energy and instrumental talents.
