When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth

Not Noiice

by Sean Padilla

Austin noise-rock septet When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth loves to give its listeners two of everything: two drummers, two shredders, two screamers, and—if the title of its second album is any indication—even two vowels! Because of such, they often sound like two bands from Touch and Go’s early roster playing simultaneously. Expect lots of odd-metered riffs, pile-driving rhythms and indecipherable hollering, but don’t expect much in the way of linearity. Many songs abruptly switch from one idea to the next, rarely returning to their original themes. It’s telling that the album’s most accessible song is an instrumental called “Big Fuck Party”. Not Noiice isn’t an easy listen, but it rocks hard, which should be enough of a recommendation for some.
