Baby Guts aren’t anything but a high-energy trio intent on producing quick, punchy garage rock-punk nuggets as is the case with “Bad Mouth” and the buzz-saw approach fuelling “Tiny Cuts”. Led by guitarist and singer Laura Larson, Baby Guts rarely feel the need to go longer than two minutes to get their point across. And while it’s not innovative by a long shot, it’s still coming from the right place. This is certainly true on “Shark Teeth” as Larson gives way to bassist Taylor Motari. However the first great gem among the 14 is “Asbestos/Esophagus” that resembles ‘80s pop star Nena fronting Puffy AmiYumi. The group slows the proceedings down somewhat during “Rum And Coke”, a song that could be mistaken for a really rough home demo. But things get back to the hectic, hellish pacing for “Bedsheets” which is another keeper in the vein of Die Mannequin. As for the two songs which surpass that short time limit, “Meat & Gesture” is a slow-building foot-stomper the New York Dolls would be proud of.
