Sheryl Crow

Home for Christmas

(A&M)

US release date: 11 October 2008

By Sarah Moore

Sheryl Crow has released her first holiday album this year in October. Available for only $7.95 with the purchase of three cards from Hallmark Gold Crown stores, Home for Christmas Crow’s first holiday album begins with a bluesy big band version of “Go Tell It on the Mountain” that simmers with Crow’s radiant vocals and rocks with a sousaphone bass-line. A string section helps smooth the minor chords into a festive holiday mood. Jazz and funk-oriented “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)” follows next with chunky guitar by Roger Fritz, a saxophone section and the light funk of Crow’s organ. Booker T appears on four other songs on the album. Crow also performs her first written Christmas song, “There Is a Star That Shines Tonight”, a soft ballad punctuated by a delicate and angelic string section.
