Note to self (and you as well, Gentle Reader): just because a band name follows the math of “adjective + plural noun,” it does not necessarily follow that said band will be a garage band. To wit, the Bloody Beetroots, whose producer and driving force is not a Nuggets devotee, but rather a thirty-something Italian influenced equally by electronica and classical music. The Rombo EP (a full-length is on the way soon) stands as a fine introduction to Rifo’s methods. The title track would nicely rub up against Daft Punk on the dance floor, while a little classical piano that introduces “I Love the Bloody Beetroots” calls to mind Frank Zappa’s mid-‘80s synclavier workouts before exploding into a full-on club banger. And it’s a good thing “I Love…” appears twice on the disc (as a radio edit and extended mix), as it offsets the not-in-a-good-way disorienting and inert “Yeah Boy”. I’m not sure the general record-buying public—that is to say, non-DJs—purchases house EPs, but the club-oriented will find plenty to work up a sweat to on Rombo.
