Singer-songwriter Tony Furtado goes down a murky road to begin this latest album. The opener is a winding, intricate banjo ditty dubbed “The Bawds Of Zuphony” which sets the stage for the light, breezy “Deep Water” and the bouncy, pedestrian “Lighten Up Your Load”. Furtado ups the ante with the rocking “Raise ‘Em Up” that sounds like a Fogerty-leaning number but his bread and butter are often the melodic, mid-tempo moments such as “Waste Of The Moon”, a song that doesn’t reinvent the wheel but still comes through quite well. Probably the only number that falls off the rails is “Tongue Tied” and its balancing act between roots and radio-friendly pop. He atones for this with the gentle “Color Of Cold” and “Weight Of The World”, a tune having a bit more depth and weight to it.
