Modern SkirtsAll of Us in Our Night(Self-Released) US release date: 20 January 2009 UK release date: Available as import By Michael MetivierFor a young band, to have both David Lowery and R.E.M.’s Mike Mills produce tracks (five songs, and one, respectively) on your new self-released album is quite a coup, and a confidence builder as well. But to be honest, there’s not much substantive difference on All of Us in Our Night between the tracks helmed by those alternative rock titans and those self-produced by the band. The album is comprised of crisply recorded catchy pop rock songs that seek incorporate their quirky chord changes and tonal shifts as deftly as possible. At times, the Modern Skirts sound a little too eager and overstretched, but more often than not, they’re capable and catchy. And occasionally, as on the penultimate “Mrs.”, they’re strikingly beautiful. 19 February 2009Modern Skirts - Pasadena |
