REPO

(Paw Tracks; US: 7 Apr 2009; UK: Available as import)

Trying to really focus on Repo, the latest from Brooklyn’s Black Dice, is a bit like trying to stare at the stars and shapes you see when you close your eyes, or the shimmer from a hot road. The harder you stare, the less you see. At the same time, if you unfocus just enough, and try not to think about it, you’ll tumble into a world of halucinatory delights. The trio, made up of brothers Eric and Bjorn Copeland plus Aaron Warren, have been making music that stands at the crossroads of jazz, noise, and jam music for the past 10 years. Repo melds overmodulated drumbeats, guitars, otherworldly chattering, distorted saxophone, and a million other bleeps and blurps into echoy sonic clouds. It’s by turns engrossing, boring, and terrifying. Just let it wash over you and try not to think too much about it. You’ll be glad you did.

This Black Dice member's collection of previously vinyl-only sound collage EPs is best enjoyed as an experiment rather than a possible purveyor of memorable singles and easy fun.

Black Dice's new album, an amalgamation of 12-inch singles released over the past few years, is its most accessible work to date.
