Mammifer has been taking lessons from its adversaries in the world of doom metal and orchestrated post-rock. Building epic songs on the resilience of triads from Faith Coloccia’s piano, Hirror Enniffer gets lost in a static world of drones and ambience, a world that intrigues and challenges your archetypal Hydra Head listener. Not many bands are capable of using the doom/drone element in a tasteful and melodic way, but Mammifer learned the word subtlety at an early age, it appears.

It’s easy to see how this music would create a modern backdrop to the wet, dreary land of Seattle. Building itself on repetition, the songs not only create a world based on their surroundings, but also compliment a pensive environment to live in. This album may not have been possible without the work of seasoned veteran Chris Commons (These Arms Are Snakes), who helps turn the melodies of Coloccia into expansive, grand compositions. If Hirror Enniffer is soon to become a staple in the Hydra Head roster, it shouldn’t take too long for them to catch on across a wide range of listeners.
