By Alan RantaThe third album from LA beatsmith Ras G hits that golden spot between the stuttering spaced out instrumental hip-hip of Flying Lotus, the avant-afro of Mike Ladd, and the found-soundscape chill of Carlos y Gaby’s quiet masterpiece La Voz Sabia De Los Cosmos. No wonder Carlos Nino has been singing the man’s praises. This brotha really is from another planet. If the most recent from Prefuse 73, Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian didn’t take you where you wanted to go, this fabulous addition to the ever expanding and thoroughly eclectic catalogue of Alpha Pup will at least hitch a ride with you for a while and get you high. Brotha From Anotha Planet is not memorable enough stick with you for the long haul, but it will at least get you within hitchhiking distance of outer space. Lasting effect notwithstanding, the album reveals Ras G to be an amazingly versatile knob twiddler with myriad influences and a definite life-changing mood in mind. Ignore him now, but one day, he will light up a piece of your world.
