If you are a breaks deejay, you can’t just spin Tipper and Bassnectar tracks (sadly). Since this is the case, the fabulously titled Speaker Humpin’ EP from Shambhala alum Subvert is perfect to fill transitional time. The synth bass sound used in all four tracks is ripped out of the Bassnectar playbook and run to perfection. It is actually easier to tell the tracks apart by their samples rather than their composed sound.

Unashamed chunks of early ‘90s pop hits define the last three tracks, while a siren and some pornography have their way with the opening title cut. However, considering the EP’s title and that the blatant Bassnectar bass is faithfully rendered guttural orgasmic warp, you have to give it some respect. Subvert could have chosen far worse influences to lift his inspiration from. He’s going to have to find the next level all by himself, since sounding good on a massive system doesn’t help the repeat home listener, but he is within spitting distance of it.
