This record marks the solo debut from Armchair Martian/Drag the River singer/guitarist Jon Snodgrass. Visitor’s Band alludes to the fact that Snodgrass recorded the tracks here in various locales throughout the US, backed by various ad hoc ensembles that included (but were not limited to) members of the Ergs, Paw, Two Cow Garage and his dog. Fast or slow, Snodgrass is good with a melody, whether it be on the power-poppy “Fast in Last” or the more pastoral “Murderfield”, where Jon posits a collaboration between Bob Mould and Don Rich. The Two Cow track is a high point, a raucous romp through the Schemers’ chestnut “Remember My Name” with guest vocals from Emerson Torrey’s son. Completists will enjoy the final track that reprises the entire record in demo form. Visitor’s Band is a fine introduction for the newcomer and a welcome addition for any fan of previous Jon Snodgrass projects.
