By Sarah MooreAlthough he is from New Brunswick, singer songwriter Chriss Sutherland sings in both Spanish and English on this release with Brown Bird. Brown Bird is the name David Lamb, a singer/songwriter/guitarist/banjo player who lives in Rhode Island, has recorded under since 2002, with two recent additions from Providence band Barn Burning. What results is a haunting, lush (in virtuosity) and minimal (in instrumentation) set of songs that feels like a shimmering mescaline excursion. “Volando Voy (El Camaron de la Isla)” is Sutherland’s take on a classic flamenco song he heard by Kiko Veneno. Various exotic percussives underline a Santana guitar riff as meditative and psychedelic lyrics spew forth from what sounds like a Mexican street troubadour and his set of friends. Although one of the backing women is a tad pitchy, the song remains hard charged and trippy.
