B for Brontosaurus

A Thousand Times Yes

(Self Released; US: 10 Jun 2006; UK: Unavailable)

B is for Brontosaurus, and O is definitely for obnoxious. This trio from Massachusetts plays the kind of annoying twee-folk that makes the Moldy Peaches look like moldy geniuses. “Modern Astronomy” is an educational folk ditty about, you guessed it, unified field theory, while “Firetruck” pontificates about “respecting your elders”. Bass player/keyboardist Joanna lends her cutesy vocals to “Soda Pop Rock”, making an awkward attempt at innuendo. “Who Will Sail My Ship Ashore?” has each member trading vocals back-and-forth with atrociously juvenile lyrics about sleeping in trundle beads and cooking steaks. “Robots” is a really lame attempt at spunk rock, while “A Lady’s Lament for Her Lover Gone to Sea” introduces the ukulele to this quickly sinking ship. The cover art for A Thousand Times Yes includes a cardboard pop-up of a cartoon dinosaur, but, like the songs on the inside, the attempt doesn’t come off as ironic or funny, just pathetic.
