While there will always be a shrine in my closet to the stunning, laudably brief intensity that is Melt Banana, I think the answer to the question of whether the world will always have room in its heart for a ferocious all-girl group from Japan is a resounding: Yes! Bleach03 (formerly Bleach and Bleachmobile) have been around for just a handful of years, and could hardly have more thrashing, screaming, lovably cartoonish aggression if they were the bastard love children of the Melvins and The Slits. They sound like a pissed off Lene Lovich on crack. The trio is fast, tight, fun and demands to be seen live. Their latest disc (mastered by Chris Athens, who has worked with some band called Coldplay) gets a U.S. release out of Austin and comes with thoughtfully prepared lyric translation into English. So you can see that they are singing things like: “Searching for an entrance with mini-skirt on” and “Skull trial, skull trial, skull trial. I am praying”.
