Forget the nutty name that sounds like it should be the monicker of a hardcore band, Brian Jonestown Massacre play brilliant 60’s inspired psychedlic pop. Their influences run the gamut of ‘60s beat: The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Small Faces, The Kinks, and The Byrds. BJM has managed to make retro pop sound contemporary in the Zombies and Kinks-like “Jennifer” and the Animals influenced tracks “Got My Eyes On You” and “Nothing To Lose.” “Love” sounds like it could have been a shoegazing classic. Many American bands mining the ‘60s for influences leave out the vital component, R&B, that gave ‘60s bands their great resonance—BJM doesn’t. This record’s got soul and sounds like a sure-fire bet for a spot on the end-of-year best lists.
