Jawbox
My Scrapbook Of Fatal Accidents
(DeSoto)
by Sarah Zupko

Formed by former members of Jawbox and Government Issue, Burning Airlines packs a serious one-two punch with a set of tense, rocking songs possessing an undeniable tunefulness. Make no mistake about it though, Burning Airlines is no mere Jawbox retread. J. Robbins’ buzzsaw guitar lends a spiky melodicism, while the rhythm section is every bit as tight and ferocious. It’s a rare band that can create great headbanging tunes that make you want to sing along. Get ready to play some air guitar and bounce around your room with this one.

If the new Burning Airlines disc isn’t enough to satiate your Jawbox craving, the seminal D.C. band has put together a retrospective scrapbook of sorts, with a treasure trove of B-sides spanning the duration of the band’s eight-year career. While it’s true B-sides compilations can often be a dodgy proposition, Jawbox is something of a throwback to bands like the Small Faces and the Smiths, who consistently wrote great material and gave their fans value for money. So, dig in, fans and enjoy the final Jawbox record.
