Comedy is comedy, folk is folk and only a few performers should combine the two. Dan Reeder is not one of them. Sorry Dan, but the hokey and quirky “Waiting for My Cappuccino” is a tender tune that falls flat and goes nowhere quickly. After that, “Just a Tune” is, well, just a rather ordinary folk tune that carries little weight or quality with it. Fortunately, “You’ll Never Surf Again” is a far better effort as Reeder makes his barren, soulful vocals complement his guitar picking. And “I Drink Beer” has its moments but comes off like something that Jeff Foxworthy would be penning. Reeder tries some old-school doo-wop traits with “You Should Have Wrote a Book” as he talks about being shot at, but it just doesn’t come together. At times Reeder isn’t as annoying, with “Shoot Me to the Moon” bringing to mind John Prine as does “Beautiful”. It’s a hit and miss album though, with “Pussy Titty” and “Pussy Heaven” futile attempts at comedy. After the mind-numbing “All My Money”, Reeder gives a decent cover of Procol Harum’s “A Whiter Shade of Pale”.
