Davila 666 is a big, fat, gleeful, slappy, smacky, hip-jerking, howling, dumb-as-a-rock-and-proud-of-it garage rock album from Puerto Rico. When the musicians slow down for “Tú” then their weaknesses show—there are too few ideas in the song and they get repeated too often. Tenderness is not their strong point. When they’re going rough and fast, ramming fuzzily at the guitar, then they’re grottily enjoyable and if you’re in a forgiving mood you can skip over the fact that the songs could do with stronger hooks. The Rolling Stones are an influence, says the publicity. You can hear the Jagger pout in their delivery. Publicity goes on to tell us that the band began in “the summer of 2005 when singer Sir Charles was ‘sick of this shit,’” but what kind of career-defining shit he was sick of we never find out. All polished rock shit post-the-1970s, maybe? Photographs inside the album notes show the musicians licking their guitars and smoking.
