The long awaited debut from France’s most dangerous dance duo, Greg Delon and Andre Dalcan deliver precisely what makes minimal house as addictive as it can be. Tracks often never seem to peak. Certain sounds drop off while others become busier, then seemingly out of nowhere you’re nodding your head. If left unchecked, that nodding leads to bouncing and, eventually, flailing of spastic proportions. The four-four beats of Tanz (which translates to “dance”) are warm and compressed till punchy. Some synth lines betray disco, techno, and pop influences, but the songs never get busy enough to go pure. This is a house record, period, and a good one at that. Boxer has close ties to Kompakt, and there’s no guessing why when you listen to this record. The imposing warp bassline from “Beyond Clouds”—which hovers throughout the track’s simple shaker beat, groaning like a UFO attempting take-off—tells you all you need to know. Actually, the line “I want to come in your brain” from the Acen flavored bad acid trip “Friend” may tell you more than you want to know.
