If you thought the debut release from the wife of the artist formerly known as Wooden Wand was going to be on some Vashti Bunyan-style freak-folk quietness, you are in for quite a surprise upon listening to the eponymous debut of her band, Jex Thoth. With husband James Jackson Toth in tow on guitar, Jessica’s band, Jex Thoth, channels the heavy AOR fury of such groups as Fanny and Little Queen-era Heart on their impressive eponymous debut. Her vocals rely heavily on the ominous phrasing of Ozzy Osbourne circa Black Sabbath Vol. 4, which is a good thing, especially upon hearing her sexy howl behind the heavy psychedelic swirl of such tracks as the four-part “Equinox Suite”. And if you listen closely on the third part of that suite, you can hear the faint wail of freak folk as it gasps its last dying breath.
