Relatively unknown, from cornfield, Indiana, JPLS made his first appearance on M_nus records’ min2MAX compilation.  JPLS shares much of the same aesthetic as his labelmates (minimal beat, weird noise, layer, repeat) but often strays from his somewhat traditional labelmates by avoiding the usual minimal-rave rhythms.  It’s helpful to know that Twilite, JPLS’s debut full-length, was recorded between the hours of 3 and 5 a.m.  Like Blockhead’s Music for Cavelight, one must approach early, early morning beat-music with a certain nocturnal demeanor.  Rules: 1) Listen to the record in question in a setting as close as possible to the artist’s “studio”.  Lights off, laptop screen brightness at full, fat headphones strapped to dome.  2) Bob your head for crissakes, if you followed #1, no one is watching.  3) Mood enhancers really do bring a certain, important appreciation.  4) There’s this strange idea floating around that people actually dance to minimal techno.  They don’t.  So don’t.  5) Layer, repeat.
