The Australian band Kelt has a dreamy pop sensibility, one that’s been done before but never gets tired or stale when done perfectly—as is the case here. A Travis-meets-Keane-like opener “Wake Myself Up” would lull you to sleep if you weren’t careful, but that should be taken in the brightest light possible. The somber “Plane’s Eye View” which evolves into a chugging, folksy feel is just as pretty, bringing to mind singer-songwriters like Rufus Wainwright and particularly David Gray. While there’s a certain “woe’s me” theme in a lot of the lyrical material, it doesn’t diminish the tender, meticulous care given to tracks like “Incomplete” which is anything but incomplete. The album glides along at an easy gait during the gorgeous “Help Wanted” and the melancholic “Unrequited” that seems perfect for solitary Sunday walks in the fall. But none seem to rise above the emotional “When We Lose Our Way”.
