Lili Haydn is somebody you’ve certainly heard play violin, whether you realize it or not. She started with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, but then also performed with rock acts ranging from Porno for Pyros to Tom Petty. This solo disc features her violin work, of course. But it also showcases a fine, emotive singer too. In some cases, she comes off psychedelic, as with “Strawberry Street”. But on “Can’t Give Everything”, which features help from the great mandolin man, Marvin Etzioni, she sounds a little new age. “Can’t Give Everything” also sports really cool distorted cello. Who knew the cello could rock like that? Haydn will likely always be in demand as a musician. But Place Between Places also proves she’s an excellent singer/songwriter – albeit, one with a bow.
