A two-piece tandem (featuring Annie “Hozoji” Matheson-Margulis and Justine “Justice” Valdez) are the ingredients which make Lozen. And a lot of this material seems overly weighty and genre-bending, beginning with the classic rock wails that open “Breech”. Fortunately the song morphs into something of a higher quality despite plodding along for the better part of nine minutes. “Made With Love” is a song that doesn’t go anywhere meaningful with more of the same. Lozen hits gold with “Unspeakable Truths” which seems to meld the intensity of the vocals with a more textured, winding musical arrangement. Too often though the group gets bogged down in artsiness for artiness’s sake as is the case with the extended “Erleichda!” and the rather stale shoegazer-tinged “Wet Nightmare”.
