Manchester Orchestra

What's Left Behind

(Columbia Records)

by Dan MacIntosh

There’s a chilling moment during this band documentary when Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull sings the song, “Where Have You Been?” As he explains it, the song can be looked at from two opposite perspectives. On the one hand, it is Hull, the son of a pastor, asking where God has been during the tough times of his life. Conversely, God is asking Hull that very same hard question. It’s the kind of song that appeals to Christians and non-Christians, sinners and saints alike. At only just over 30 inutes in length, this DVD is but a brief look at Manchester Orchestra. But with songs like “Where Have You Been?”, it’s obvious Hull is a true lyrical talent. I’m not interested in what’s left behind; I want to know what’s ahead for this emerging act.

The debut album from this young Atlanta band is an unfortunate piece of bland, derivative Emo Lite.
