Athens, Georgia boy pop combo the Masters of the Hemisphere are youngsters for sure, but its members are veterans of more than 30 bands and have a back catalogue of some 200 songs over 5 years. Their debut long-player collects a sampling of that repertoire, including the ultra new-wavey, OMD-laced “West Essex” and the ever-so-slightly Bacharach-inflected “Billy Mitchell.” Other jumping-off points include Belle & Sebastian and Holiday—both perfectors of the twee pop that is laced in the lining of so much of the Masters of the Hemisphere’s material—as well as the artsy rock of Unrest. Producing such winning pop songs at such a young age, I can’t wait to hear what this bunch has up their sleeves in the next couple of years.
