A band name like Messer für Frau Müller (German for “Knife for Mrs. Miller”) misleadingly suggests ominous music. In fact, the Russian band with this name is a self-described “post-easy listening” group that combines sound samples from ‘50s and ‘60s pop culture with programming and traditional rock instruments. Their latest album, Triangle, Dot & Devil, features bouncy instrumental tracks such as “Funny Man Under Anesthesia”, in which a theremin gives the music the sound of a sockhop heard through the ears of a clown on nitrous oxide. The different sonic elements are dovetailed so seamlessly throughout the album that most listeners will miss the music’s complexity and experimentalism. The album’s goofiness will not appeal to everyone, but open-minded listeners will find Triangle, Dot & Devil to be a fun and rewarding listen.
