Le Grand Magistery is making quite a name for itself with swanky Europop. Witness the recent Louis Phillipe release and the various efforts of the quite mad, but always entertaining Momus. Combining Momus’ keen wit with a suave musical sense, Mr. Wright is one Heter Kevin, formerly leader of the band Always on the old El Records label. Subtitled “Sidereal Sounds from Mr. Wright,” Star Time might have been better labelled “surreal sounds.” “The Man Who Was Not” makes that abundantly clear with its moogy synths intertwined with trumpets and dreamy vocals, while the appropriately-titled “Lost in Space” adds a droning rhythm guitar on the mellow vocals, interspersed with some truly whacked-out sounds, some of which sound like a high-tech version of a soundtrack for Alfred Hitchcock’s film The Birds.
