Ask My Favorite because they’ve pulled off a minor coup in co-opting the sounds of early ‘80s new wave—think OMD and early Depeche Mode, with dashes of Bowie—while imbibing their tunes with a strangely modern mood that dovetails nicely with indie’s current popularity.

Funny thing is, My Favorite isn’t some London Britpop leftover—they hail from the most unlikely of places, Long Island. Highlights such as “Absolute Beginners Again” pump out wiggly analogue synthesizer tunes and beats at a ferocious pace, while Michael Grace Jr. does his best David Gahan impersonation. Far from being a mere nostalgia album, Love at Absolute Zero proves new wave’s proclaimed death in the ‘80s was way too premature, while My Favorite shows there is plenty of gas left in the genre’s tank.
