Paleo's Song Diary: 365 Songs in 365 Days

(self-released; US: 1 Nov 2006; UK: 1 Nov 2006)

If your MP3 player needs padding, you can’t do better than take a stroll through indie songster Paleo’s website, and his project to record 365 songs in 365 days.  He’s already up to about 280, so you’ve got some catching up to do, kids. And Paleo’s got rules too—every song must be original, written over the course of the day, recorded, mixed, and uploaded by sunrise.  Plus, every Sunday he has to rewrite the lyrics to the song “Sunday Prayer”.  If he fails to achieve this feat for even a day, then caput, the project’s over. That kind of devotion makes Sufjan Stevens look like a dabbler. The songs are studiously organized on the site, numbered as well as detailing where the composition was recorded, as Paleo tours all over the states. He even gives you the lyrics.  So how are the songs? Well damn, I haven’t heard them all!  But what I’ve been able to sample is a more than worthy array of lo-fi and quirky and folk, featuring Paleo’s cracked warble and acoustic pick-strum, from “Asleep on a Moving Ship” to the excellent “Caliper Kiss”.  However you want to go about digging into this ridiculously immense feast of song, have at it.  Start with your hometown, or birthday, or whatever—chances are you’ll find something to your liking.
