Sporting a rather warped sense of humor, ferocious rock attack, and hooks galore, Pep Squad’s new disc Yreka Bakery is a blast of pure rock best described as the Pixies crossed with Weezer. Quite often they actually remind me of the great, unjustly forgotten Scottish band The Rezillos, who combined nutty lyrics with pop hooks and punk attitude. With subjects ranging from a WWF wrestling grandma (“The Fabulous Moola”) and a guy’s love for a Barbie doll (“Erik’s Got A Girlfriend”), Pep Squad can never be accused of taking themselves too seriously. And that’s what makes this album a hoot—good tunes, propulsive beats, and a whacked-out wit. Quite fittingly, they toss in a brilliant take on the Adam Ant classic “Friend Or Foe.”
