V Is for Viagra

The Remixes

(Puscifer; US: 29 Apr 2008; UK: 21 Jul 2008)

Being in two of the most respected and conceptually deep rock bands of the last twenty years must be taxing on the mind. Hence, the only possible excuse for Tool/Perfect Circle frontman Maynard James Keenan to conspire the total atrocity that was V Is for Vagina, the debut release of his solo side project Puscifier. Though it featured support from a host of talented luminaries of the alt-metal world backing him up, including members of Primus, Nine Inch Nails, King Crimson, Rage Against The Machine and Dillinger Escape Plan among others, the album was nothing more than one big dick-and-fart joke that proved to be the complete antithesis of Maynard’s otherwise intelligent design and aimed at the lowest common denominator of his fanbase. This remix collection’s sonic reconstructions of various Vagina tracks benefits from thinning out Keenan’s nonsensical lyrics and concentrating more on the music, an ominous fusion of Massive Attack-style grooves and ambient gothic atmospherics rewired by the likes of Aaron Turner of Isis, Lustmord, Paul Barker of Ministry, Skinny Puppy’s Dave Ogilvie and Danny Lohner of NIN among others. Still, with songs with such innocuous titles as “Cuntry Boner” and “Vagina Mine”, this Puscifier business is best left strictly for the meatheads of Maynard’s brood.
