Rachel's / Matmos

Full on Night

(Quarterstick)

The Rachel’s have typically been characterized as indie musicians playing chamber music. With the addition of the Matmos influence, their sound has been morphed into orchestral indie music with an abrassive metallic, almost industrial edge.

The mix is a bit hard to swallow and the LP begins with a slow, almost dreamlike sound which progressive into a noisy, tearing, screechfest. The LP has only two tracks, although they could easily be mistaken for one.

The Rachel’s are based in Louisville, Kentucky, and is a collaboration of many artists, based in the indie scene. Matmos is an electronica two piece from San Francisco. It is this eight piece collective which has created this newest of the Rachel’s ventures. This is by no means a rookie project by the Rachel’s. Their debut album Handwriting came out in 1997 and this is now their fourth release on Quarterstick records. In fact, the first track on this LP “Full on Night” is a remix of the version that originally appeared on Handwriting.

The Full on Night LP is relatively interesting although it’s finally is so abrassive it becomes almost unlistenable. This LP would do well as backing music for a mime.
