Safari So Good is a pop-punk band from Pennsylvania with a name based on either a terrible pun or a Scooby-Doo episode named after a terrible pun. On the promo material for their EP, Every Fight Is a Food Fight When You’re a Cannibal and they pose in ‘80s skateboard clothing, so it’s clear from the get-go that they don’t take themselves seriously. Their music is catchy and upbeat and nothing you haven’t heard before. But they instantly won me over with their cheesy-funny song titles like “The Right to Arm Bears” and the unwieldy-yet-awesome Simpsons reference “Dogs With Bees in Their Mouths Who When They Bark They Shoot Bees at You”.

The songs themselves are more earnest, but not to the point of emo annoyance. And they’re full of solid guitar riffs and stick-in-your-head choruses with tight harmonies. The only head-scratcher among the five songs here is a surprisingly faithful cover of Smashing Pumpkins “Perfect”, which, while fine, doesn’t really fit in with the energy and slightly goofy bent of the four originals. Safari So Good is a bit of a guilty pleasure, but they’re still a pleasure.
