Already loaded with indie cred from his work in the Sea and Cake, Sam Prekop teams with indie buds Jim O’Rourke (Gastr Del Sol), Archer Prewitt, Chad Taylor and Josh Abrams on his first solo release. Avoiding the electronic textures of the Sea and Cake’s last record by instead featuring a laid-back approach that straddles ambient and art-pop, with healthy doses of Brazilian pop, bossa nova vibes and a jazz sensibility, Prekop’s music is airy and spare, with nary a note wasted on the entire effort. The songwriting is all about atmospheric dynamics, as opposed to lyric edge. For the most part, Prekop’s whispered vocals render the lyrics beside the point, acting as an improvisational instrument that is integral to the fine ensemble playing.
